R2-D2 is a well known character out of the Star Wars universe, created
by George Lucas.
In 1983 I built an R2 unit for a Star Wars theme week during
a summer camp. Thru the years I always wanted to built another one that
would be capable of moving around and have other possibilities built in.
In January 2004 I found out thru the internet that there were much more
people like me that had the same idea and they were building R-series
units all around the world and some of them even made parts, that are
available for builders of R-series units.
So I was hooked again and started first to gather all the info that is
available on the moment. The R2 builders group has made a load of drawings
that you can use to built your own R2 unit and this info is great. These
drawings also assure that all parts fit when they are made according these
specifications.
I decided to built an all aluminum R2 unit this time, with as much working
parts that I can built in. This homepage will show all the construction
and finally the working R2 unit hopefully, but that is long way of. I
started to look around for aluminum parts and started ordering them in
February of 2004. You can find the status of the parts on the parts page
and the construction on several pages after that. The state of the complete
R2 unit at this time is shown at the final R2D2 page and below.
I have also decided to built a second R-series unit, this will be a R7
type. This R7 however will not be built from Aluminum, but from Styrene,
wood and other plastics and will be a show model only. This R7 will be
called R7-F3, as it is the third R-series robot that I will built in my
life.
